Another Border Option

Not totally happy with any of the pieced borders that I've tried, I went back to a plain border.  All of my blues are either very dark or very gray.  I needed something more of a Royal Blue.

Last week, a new Quilt Store opened a couple of miles from my house in Middletown, Ohio.  I stopped in today and spent some time talking to the owner and purchasing a potential border for the quilt - in Royal Blue.

I think the blue needs to be a bit wider that what is show here.  I do think the hue mimics the overall color of blue that is in the quilt.

  1. NO, too simple. It's a pretty piece but after all the work you put into the quilt, I'd include something with more work in it! 8-)

  2. Elaine WOULD say that!! I like the plain blue! The center is SO busy....Take it from one who already made it ;) I like your royal blue. Either that, or you could find something that is like your darkest navy in the quilt center. Often I will gravitate towards the darkest shade in a one color quilt to frame it....if you stick with the royal blue, maybe use a dark dark blue binding?

  3. I like it - a lot. That quilt has a whole bunch going on and a simple border gives it a clean finish. But what to do with all those other tries you made, the braid and the piano keys, the string blocks and the checkerboard? Is there such a thing as a border sampler? LOL All your work was beautiful, but I think the solid border is best. Your quilt is lovely and this doesn't detract from it.

  4. I love the plain blue border! I would use all the pretty pieces that you made up to create a pieced backing.
Ultimately, YOU are the expert! It's your quilt; you are the artist. Go back and look carefully at all the pictures of all the choices again. Wait a day and sleep on it. Make your own decision.
Whatever you choose, it will be a knockout quilt!

  5. I love all of the responses! I will lay it out with a darker blue border too. I heard comments that the pieced borders were a bit too dark, so I wanted to try the royal. However, I didn't try a plain dark border.

  6. I did think about making the samples a bit bigger and making a row quilt out of them! Or using them on the backing. I like the idea of the quilt better - not so I can have another quilt, but so they could be used for reference later! If you look closely at the checkerboard border, you may notice that it is actually the border on a finished quilt. Complete with quilting and binding.

  7. If you haven't already finished this one ... I like the calmness of the blue you have chosen. It doesn't take away from the center. Nice job. Bonnie/Va

  8. I like your royal blue border and agree with you that it should be a little wider. My 24" ruler is 6 1/2" so my outer borders are usually that width. It's going to be a beautiful quilt.

  9. I think it looks great! But I'm biased towards quilts with no borders at all.
